Winter… Sad, right?

I had a thought today, about nature, and all that.

We were walking to the beaver pond, as usual this time of year, and looking all around at all the fall colors, the trees, the leaves, the grass, the dirt. Its all god. Flowing out of this dirty world. Proof of such existence.

With all these colors its no wonder why people dont kill themselves. There is something bright out there, something that keeps people from feeling sick constantly. Light. Color is only possible with light.

Color is what gets people going, its the main ingredient in everything.

So what gets people going in winter? Everything, the grass, the trees, the leaves, is covered in snow. So why doesnt anyone kill themselves in winter? Well they do, actually the suicide rates are up in winter. If it wasnt for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and various new years celebrations, Winter would be the most depressing season of all.

Once winter is over, and all the snow is melted, its like a huge sigh of relief. Its like going from a really dark wallpaper to a really bright one. Its like washing a dirt covered white shirt, and it becoming as bright as a new shirt. Its mostly like having a rainbow, except the only colors in the rainbow are black, and then all the sudden, the real colors show, the real beauty is uncovered.

But during winter, people who dont have families to go to for the holidays, feel crappy, people who cant celebrate, feel terrible. Without the holidays, winter would be one boring, depressing season.

Sad,

but true.

But B, what about the cool, crisp air that gives you a refreshing chill when you take in a deep breath? Or, what about the soft padded snow to slide on, throw with, or walk on? What about the light snow-falls that has everything float around and down, giving a sense of peace and content? And the snow does give off a radiant prism when the Sun (or any other light) reflects off of it.

Dude, winter is amazing, but in a different way. It’s actually my favorite season. Cool to share that though.

I’m with you there: winter is totally depressing. Even the holidays are depressing for some people. But for some reason I still look forward to them.

Winter is the end of a cycle - old growth dies and new is preparing to emerge. It is both horrific and beautiful.

The holidays can be so lovely - people huddling together by a warm hearth - enjoying one another - sharing - that is wonderful indeed.

For others, it is a stark reminder that they are no longer significant to anyone - choice, circumstance - even old age isolate so many people. I used to dispise each holiday as my parents would vie for my presence. I was torn between 2 worlds - then 2 more once I married. Geez no one tells you that at prenupt counciling.

This body of Christ is such a glorious light in that confused world. This is my family. The holidays grow brighter in that light.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, B.

i agree with you, i hate winter. mostly because walking to school is hell. But God created winter as beautiful as the other seasons. I say people kill thmslves because of the holidays. People realize they have nothing and are so filled with selfish lonliness they decide to kill themselves.. and because they are cold.

Oh B, you need to recall Pink Floyd in “Dark Side of the Moon” ….

    “Home, home again.
I like to be here when I can.
And when I come home cold & tired,
It’s nice to warm my bones beside the fire.”

The beauty of winter depends on what’s inside, back “home”. When a crackling fire is waiting there, it’s a blast to go outside & sled & etc. Read Robert Frost’s poem about it — forgot the name — it takes place in the context of heading for a warm hearth with warm relationships, and it’s winter, and beautiful.

Winter is the last phase of life. You see this in older people, too: there’s a majesty and beauty in their old age, but only if there’s warmth in their heart.
